چکیده

Although reactive halogen species (X*=X, •X−2 , X2 and HOX, where X=Br, Cl, or I) are important environmental oxidants, relatively little is known about their kinetics in condensed phases such as seawater and sea-salt particles. Here we describe a new technique to determine reactive chlorine and bromine species in aqueous solutions by using allyl alcohol (CH2=CHCH2OH) as a chemical probe. This probe is combined with competition kinetics in order to determine steady state concentrations of X*(aq). In some cases the technique also can be used to determine the rates of formation and lifetimes of X* in aqueous solution. In a companion paper we reported the results of our method development for aqueous solutions containing only bromide (Br). In this paper, we discuss method development for solutions containing chloride (Cl) alone, and for solutions containing both bromide and chloride.

A chemical probe technique for the determination of reactive halogen species in aqueous solution: Part 1 – bromide solutions

Reactive halogen species (X*=X, •X−2 , X2 and HOX, where X=Br, Cl, or I) in seawater, sea-salt particles, and snowpacks play important roles in the chemistry of the marine boundary layer. Despite this, relatively little is known about the steady-state concentrations or kinetics of reactive halogens in these environmental samples. In part this is because there are few instruments or techniques t...

Drag Reduction by Anionic Surfactant Solutions in Gravity Driven Flow System

This paper presents efflux time experiments performed in the absence and presence of aqueous solutions of Drag Reducing Agents (DRAs) when a liquid is emptied from a large open cylindrical storage tank through an exit piping system. The drag reducing agents studied are Dodecyl benzene sulfonate anionic surfactant and a mixed solution of surfactant and sodium chloride counter ion. The variab...

Production of gas phase NO2 and halogens from the photolysis of thin water films containing nitrate, chloride and bromide ions at room temperature.

Nitrate and halide ions coexist in particles generated in marine regions, around alkaline dry lakes, and in the Arctic snowpack. Although the photochemistry of nitrate ions in bulk aqueous solution is well known, there is recent evidence that it may be more efficient at liquid-gas interfaces, and that the presence of other ions in solution may enhance interfacial reactivity. This study examines...
